A PDF gets the invoice out. Gripd gets you paid.

This page makes a good invoice. Once it's sent, a PDF can't tell you anything. A free Gripd account picks up where the PDF stops.

What to put on an invoice in the UK

A clear invoice gets paid faster. Include: your business name and contact details, your customer's name, an invoice number, the invoice date and due date, a line for each product or service with quantity and price, the total, and exactly how to pay you.

If you're registered for VAT, add your VAT registration number and show the VAT separately.

VAT on invoices in the UK

The standard VAT rate in the UK is 20%. You must register for VAT once your VAT-taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold (£90,000 a year at the time of writing); below it, most sole traders don't charge VAT. If you're VAT-registered, a VAT invoice must show your VAT registration number and the VAT amount. Check HMRC's current guidance for your situation.

Getting paid on time

In the UK, businesses can claim interest and compensation on late payment from other businesses, so a clear due date on every invoice is worth having.

Number your invoices in order (INV-0001, INV-0002) so you and your customers can always refer to the right one, and keep a copy of every invoice you send.

Send it, track it, get paid: keep your invoices in Gripd

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. Make as many invoices as you like and download them as PDF or image files, with no sign-up. A small "Made free with Gripd" line sits at the bottom.

Do I need an account?

No. If you want to save your invoices, send them by link, see when they're paid and send reminders, you can do that in Gripd for free.

Do I have to add VAT?

The standard VAT rate in the UK is 20%. You must register for VAT once your VAT-taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold (£90,000 a year at the time of writing); below it, most sole traders don't charge VAT. If you're VAT-registered, a VAT invoice must show your VAT registration number and the VAT amount. Check HMRC's current guidance for your situation.

What's the difference between an invoice and a receipt?

An invoice asks to be paid: it says what's owed and how to pay. A receipt confirms you've been paid. Send the invoice first, then a receipt once the money arrives.

Can I add my logo?

Yes. Upload a logo and it appears at the top of the invoice. It stays on your device; nothing is uploaded.

How do I send the invoice?

Download the PDF or image and send it on WhatsApp or by email, or print it. In Gripd you can also send a link that shows the customer exactly how to pay you.
