A PDF gets the invoice out. Gripd gets you paid.

This page makes a good invoice. Once it's sent, a PDF can't tell you anything. A free Gripd account picks up where the PDF stops.

What to put on an invoice in Canada

A clear invoice gets paid faster. Include: your business name and contact details, your customer's name, an invoice number, the invoice date and due date, a line for each product or service with quantity and price, the total, and exactly how to pay you.

If you're registered for GST/HST, add your GST/HST number (Business Number) and show the GST/HST separately.

GST/HST on invoices in Canada

GST is 5% across Canada, and some provinces combine it with provincial tax as HST (13% to 15%). Other provinces add their own PST separately. Small suppliers under CA$30,000 in taxable sales over four consecutive quarters generally don't have to register. If you're registered, show your GST/HST number and the tax amount. Check the CRA's current rules for your province.

Getting paid on time

Interac e-Transfer is how most people here pay small businesses, so putting your e-Transfer email on the invoice removes the biggest reason for slow payment.

Number your invoices in order (INV-0001, INV-0002) so you and your customers can always refer to the right one, and keep a copy of every invoice you send.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. Make as many invoices as you like and download them as PDF or image files, with no sign-up. A small "Made free with Gripd" line sits at the bottom.

Do I need an account?

No. If you want to save your invoices, send them by link, see when they're paid and send reminders, you can do that in Gripd for free.

Do I have to add GST/HST?

GST is 5% across Canada, and some provinces combine it with provincial tax as HST (13% to 15%). Other provinces add their own PST separately. Small suppliers under CA$30,000 in taxable sales over four consecutive quarters generally don't have to register. If you're registered, show your GST/HST number and the tax amount. Check the CRA's current rules for your province.

What's the difference between an invoice and a receipt?

An invoice asks to be paid: it says what's owed and how to pay. A receipt confirms you've been paid. Send the invoice first, then a receipt once the money arrives.

Can I add my logo?

Yes. Upload a logo and it appears at the top of the invoice. It stays on your device; nothing is uploaded.

How do I send the invoice?

Download the PDF or image and send it on WhatsApp or by email, or print it. In Gripd you can also send a link that shows the customer exactly how to pay you.
