Most hustlers never really look back at their month. Money comes in, money goes out, the month ends, and the next one starts before you've asked the simple questions: did I actually make money? Which hustle carried me? Where did the money leak? That's how a busy month quietly turns into a broke one. A short monthly business review fixes that, and it doesn't need an accountant or a spreadsheet. That's exactly why we built The Sit-down in Gripd.
Why a monthly business review matters
Big companies review their numbers every month for a reason. A month is long enough to show a pattern and short enough to fix it before it becomes a problem. For a small business or side hustle in Nigeria, a monthly check-in helps you:
- See which hustle is really paying you, not just which one keeps you busy
- Catch costs that crept up while you weren't looking, like restock, transport or data
- Notice money people still owe you before it becomes money you never collect
- Spot when hustle money and personal money are mixing
- Decide on a few clear actions for next month, instead of hoping it goes better
Skip the review and you only find out something was wrong when the account is already empty.
What is The Sit-down?
The Sit-down is a monthly check-in inside Gripd. On the 1st of every month, it opens a short conversation about the month that just ended. Gripd shows you your month in numbers, asks a few simple questions about how it went, and then gives you a short, personal summary with a plan for the new month.
It takes about 10 minutes. You answer by tapping quick replies, or you can type in your own words, in plain English or pidgin. "My supplier for Ladipo dey cheat me" works just as well as "my restock costs went up".
How The Sit-down works
1. On the 1st, Gripd lets you know your sit-down is ready. It stays open the whole month, so you can do it whenever you have a quiet moment. 2. You see "Your month in numbers": what each hustle kept after costs, and its share of the money that came in. 3. Gripd opens with what stood out, good news first. For example: "Design was up 40% on last month. One thing to watch: costs ate most of what Car parts made." 4. It asks how the month felt, what the hardest part was, and what you want from next month. If you pick something like "Customers owing me", it asks one follow-up, such as how long they've owed you. 5. You get five suggested actions for next month and keep the three that fit you best.
What The Sit-down looks at in your numbers
The Sit-down reads the entries you already log in Gripd and checks for the things that matter most to a small business:
- Hustles where costs are eating most of the income, with how much of every ₦100 actually stayed with you
- Hustles that spent more than they brought in
- Income that rose or dropped sharply compared to last month
- Expense categories that jumped, like restock or transport
- Money still owed to you from invoices or debts older than two weeks
- Personal spending showing up inside a hustle's costs
- Whether your profit leans too heavily on one hustle
- Days with nothing logged, which can hide where money went
It only says what your numbers show. If a hustle had no entries, it tells you so instead of guessing.
What you get at the end
Your summary comes in three short cards:
- What's working: the things to keep doing, like a hustle that grew or a healthy margin
- Where money is leaking: the one or two problems worth fixing first
- Your plan for next month: the three actions you picked, each small and specific enough to do within a month
The actions are practical, small-business steps. Think "send a polite reminder to everyone who owes you this week and ask new clients for 50% upfront", or "get prices from two other suppliers before your next restock". No loans, no investment tips, no get-rich-quick advice.
You can also share your summary as an image on WhatsApp or your Status. The image never shows any amounts, so you can celebrate your plan without showing anyone your money.
It checks in on your plan next month
A plan only helps if you follow through. At your next sit-down, Gripd asks about the actions you chose last time: "Last sit-down you planned to raise your prices by 10%. How did it go?" You tap Done, Not yet or Skipped. Over time, you see which habits you actually stick to, and so does your business.
Your data stays with you
The Sit-down runs entirely inside Gripd. Your numbers and your answers aren't sent to any outside service. Anything you write in the "Anything else on your mind?" step is saved as a private note that only you can see. You can delete any sit-down, or all of them at once from Settings, whenever you want.
How to do a monthly review even without Gripd
If you'd rather do it by hand, here's a simple version you can do on the first weekend of every month:
- Add up what each hustle brought in and what it cost you. Profit per hustle, not one blended total.
- Compare each number with last month. Anything that moved by more than a fifth deserves a closer look.
- List everyone who still owes you and how long they've owed.
- Find your biggest cost category and ask if it grew for a good reason.
- Write down three small actions for next month, then look at them again in four weeks.
It works. The hard part is doing it every month, which is why The Sit-down does the adding up for you and reminds you when it's time.
